How To Store Candles: 3 Things To Avoid!

Scent molecules (- or odor molecules) are always slowly but constantly evaporating out of your soy wax candle, even when it isn’t being burned. Some call that “cold throw” while others call it “scent degradation“. Scent degradation is pretty much when an unlit candle gradually loses its original fragrance – it’s totally natural and happens regardless of the candle brand or scent.

If you want to make your wax candles last a long time without losing their smell, then it’s important to know how to store them properly and most efficiently to stop scent degradation.

Luckily, storing scented candles isn’t complicated. You only need to remember to keep them away from these 3 things:

1. Avoid Heat

Fragrance oils and waxes are sensitive to heat – which is exactly what makes them perfect for smelling great when burning! However, to avoid scent degradation avoid keeping your candles anywhere that gets hotter than room temperature, and never leave candles near sources of direct heat, such as radiators, space heaters, or kitchen appliances.

Store your Artemis Candles in a place with a cool, even temperature (below 24°C). Otherwise, any excess heat may cause the candle wax to soften and increase the speed that the fragrance will evaporate.

When it comes to candles the colder the storage temperature, the better. You can even keep them in your fridge if you have extra room. However, never store candles in the freezer or outside in the UK — this may damage the candle wick and cause the wax to crack or split!

2. Avoid Moisture

Artemis Candles are best kept as dry as possible at all times. Try to avoid areas with water, moisture, humidity, and condensation while the lid is off the candle. For example, bathrooms and kitchens typically have higher levels of humidity than other rooms in the house while in use, so it’s best to steer clear of storing candles in those rooms as it can cause the wax to soften and increase the rate of loosing the scent.

3. Avoid Sunlight (UV Light)

As beautiful as it is to place your Artemis Candle Jar by a window as rays of sunshine beam into the room, storing it by the window isn’t always the best idea. When a candle is placed under direct sunlight, it causes oxidation and degradation of the fragrance oils in the wax. As a result, the scent of your candle may fade much faster than they would otherwise.

The same rule applies to other harsh sources of light such as desk lamps and spotlights. Store your candles in a dark location, when possible.

Tips For Storing Candles Correctly:

  1. Always make sure that you cover your Artemis Soy Candles when they are not being used to preserve the scent and keep dust out. During our product research, we ensured our candles would always come with a solid lid that is great for protecting the candle itself from scent degradation, dust, and wick damage.
  2. Artemis Candles in our glass jars are great because they last a very long time and the fragrance rarely spoils due to the nature and quality of materials used. As they are already in glass containers, they are easy to store one on top of the other without ruining the ones underneath (as long as they are stored in a way that they won’t fall). As long as the lid is placed back on, they will keep their scent for much longer than most competitors!
  3. Ensure that the lid is placed back on the glass jar after use for safety as well as to help the scent last longer as the lid will act as a barrier between the candle scents and any evaporation.
